Sewage or Wastewater Coming Back Up? Start Here
A drain that is overflowing, or a toilet that bubbles while the shower runs, cannot wait for morning. Call the 24/7 line and we will help you sort out the next step. While you wait, stop using water, keep sinks, tubs and the washer off, and move rugs and stored boxes away from low floor drains.
If water is rising in the tub or shower when you flush, the blockage is almost always downstream of every fixture, in the main line. If only one sink is slow, the problem is local to that branch. That one observation shortens the diagnosis a great deal, so tell us what you saw and in what order.
Do not pour drain cleaner into a standing, backed-up line. It sits in the pipe, does not reach the blockage, and puts caustic liquid where we have to work with our hands and tools. Same-day and after-hours calls go through the same line, so ask about timing when you call.
What Is Actually Clogging Your Drain
Most clogs have one of a handful of causes, and each one points to a different tool. Use this table to match what you see with what is likely in the pipe.
| What you notice | Likely cause | Where it sits | How we clear it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kitchen sink drains slowly, smells sour | Grease, soap film and food scraps | Trap and the first run of horizontal pipe | Drain machine, then jetting if the pipe is coated |
| Bathroom sink or tub holds water | Hair wrapped in soap scum | Stopper, trap and arm | Hand cleaning, small drain machine |
| Toilet gurgles when the shower or washer drains | Partial blockage in the main line | Below the branch connections | Larger drain machine through a cleanout |
| Several fixtures slow, worse after laundry | Lint, grease or roots narrowing the main | Under the house or in the yard | Machine with cutting head, camera, jetting |
| Blockage returns every few months | Roots, a sag or a cracked joint | Lateral or older pipe sections | Camera to confirm, then repair if needed |
| Floor drain in garage or laundry area backs up | Sediment, debris and lint | Trap and line to the main | Drain machine or jetting through the drain |
A table cannot see inside a pipe. When the picture is unclear, a camera settles it before anyone guesses.
Kitchen, Bathroom, Main Line and Floor Drain Clogs
Kitchen sink and dishwasher drain
Cooking fat cools and coats the pipe wall, and food scraps catch on it. A kitchen sink that clears briefly and then slows again is usually coated, not blocked. If the disposal hums but water will not leave, see garbage disposal repair before running it more.
Bathroom sink, tub and shower
Hair and soap scum build a mat around the stopper and in the trap. These are the easiest clogs to reach and the ones a plastic hair tool does well on. If the tub is slow and the sink is fine, the clog sits in that fixture's own branch.
Main line and laundry
A main drain carries everything the house sends out, so a clog here backs up the lowest fixture first, often a shower, tub or the washer standpipe. We run a larger drain machine through the cleanout or a vent, and follow with a camera when the clog is not a one-time event.
Floor drains and yard drains
Garage, laundry room and basement-style floor drains collect dirt and lint that never meet a fixture trap. Yard drains pick up soil and roots. Both respond to a drain machine, and stubborn ones need hydro jetting to wash the line out.

What We Do and What You Can Safely Try First
Safe to try yourself
- Plunge a single clogged sink or tub with a proper cup plunger and the overflow blocked
- Pull the stopper and clear the hair from it by hand
- Take apart and clean an under-sink P-trap with a bucket below
- Run hot tap water, not boiling, down a greasy but still moving kitchen drain
- Stop all water use the moment a second fixture backs up
Leave it to us
- Any clog that affects more than one fixture
- Sewage coming up in a tub, shower or floor drain
- A cable or auger that stops hard and will not advance
- A clog that has cleared and come back more than once
- Anything that needs a drain machine, hydro jetter or camera
Chemical openers and rented augers are where most home attempts go wrong. Acid and lye products can damage older pipe and leave a hazard for whoever opens the trap next. A rented cable can wedge in a bend or tear a joint, which turns a clog into a repair.
Drain Snaking, Machine Work and When Jetting Is Better
Snaking means feeding a rotating cable into the pipe until it catches the clog, then pulling or breaking it apart. We match the cable and cutting head to the pipe, a small cable for a bathroom branch and a heavier machine for a main line. For a simple hair or paper clog, this is the right and quickest tool.
Snaking punches a hole through a clog. It does not always scrape the whole pipe wall, so grease and scale can remain and rebuild. When a line is coated rather than plugged, we recommend jetting, which scours the full diameter with a high-pressure stream.
If the clog returns, the pipe, not the debris, is the real problem. A sag, a root entry or a broken section catches whatever comes through, no matter how often it is cleared. That is when we pull a camera through, or schedule a planned sewer inspection so you can see it for yourself.
Whose Pipe Is It? Sewer Basics in Union City
Union Sanitary District (USD) runs the public sewer main for Union City, Fremont and Newark, and the property owner is responsible for the whole lateral from the house to the main. If sewage is backing up, USD takes calls 24 hours a day at (510) 477-7500 and checks its own main at no charge.
That call helps you decide who to hire. If the main is clear, the blockage is probably in your lateral, which is yours to clear, and we can come out to do it. We also serve Fremont and the Tri-City area, see emergency plumbing in Fremont.
Drain and vent layout follow the California Plumbing Code, which is based on the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC), which is why a drain that keeps slowing after cleaning can point to slope or venting, not just buildup. Ask the plumber to tell you if the camera or the machine suggests a layout problem.

Quick Checks Before the Plumber Arrives
- Note the pattern. Write down which fixtures are slow, which gurgle and which back up. Order matters.
- Stop the water. No laundry, dishwasher, showers or flushing until the line is open.
- Find the cleanout. A capped pipe near the house or behind the sidewalk gives us direct access to the main line.
- Clear the floor. Move rugs, boxes and electronics away from any drain that might overflow.
- Keep pets and kids away. Wastewater carries bacteria, so wear gloves and wash after cleanup.
- Skip the chemicals. Tell us if you already poured any, so we handle the line safely.
Drain Cleaning Questions
Yes. The phone line is answered 24/7, including nights, weekends and holidays, and a plumber talks you through what to shut off and what to leave alone. Overflowing floor drains, sewage in a tub and a washer backing up into the house are all calls we treat as urgent. Ask about same-day service when you call.
Run water in a different fixture and watch. If only one sink or tub is slow, the clog is in that branch. If a toilet gurgles when the shower runs or water appears in the lowest tub, the main line is partly or fully blocked.
Snaking is quick and effective for a plug of hair, paper or a small object. Jetting is better when grease, scale or roots have coated the pipe wall. We choose based on what the pipe is doing, and many jobs start with a machine and finish with a camera.
A repeat clog usually means a cause the cleaning did not address, such as roots, a sag in the pipe, a cracked joint or years of grease. A camera shows which one, and then you can decide on repeat cleaning, jetting or repair.
We recommend against it. It rarely clears a heavy clog, can damage old pipe, and leaves caustic liquid in the trap that is a hazard to the next person working on it. If you already used some, tell us when you call.
In Union City the owner is responsible for the entire sewer lateral from the house to where it connects to the USD main. If the main is clear, the blockage is on your side. USD checks its own main for free, so call before you pay for main line work.
Yes. Garage, laundry and yard drains clog with sediment, lint and roots, and a drain machine or hydro jetter clears them. We will tell you if a drain has no trap or no outlet that we can find.
