What the Camera Report Shows
Pipe material and condition
Clay, cast iron, plastic and fiber pipe each fail in different ways. The camera shows which you have and how it is holding up.
Roots
We see whether roots are entering at joints and how dense they are, which tells us whether cleaning or repair is the realistic path.
Cracks, offsets and breaks
A joint that has shifted or a pipe that has split is clear on camera, along with how far the damage runs.
Bellies and standing water
A low spot holds water. If the camera shows a pool where the pipe should be dry, the grade is off.
Location and depth
A locator on the camera head marks the pipe's position above ground, so a repair can be planned around driveways and trees.
Video you can keep
The footage is useful for repair planning, for permit steps and for talking to a seller or another contractor.
When a Camera Inspection Makes Sense
| Situation | What the camera answers | What happens next |
|---|---|---|
| Buying a house | Is the lateral sound or a hidden cost? | Use the footage to negotiate or plan repair |
| Clog keeps returning | Is it roots, a belly or a break? | Cleaning, jetting or repair |
| Gurgling and slow drains after cleaning | Did cleaning miss a defect? | Targeted repair plan |
| Old house with cast iron or clay | How much life is left? | Monitor, line or replace |
| Wet yard or sewer smell | Is there a break leaking? | Repair and permit steps |
| Planning a remodel | Can the lateral carry added load? | Update before closing walls |
Camera Footage and Local Sewer Rules
USD says an old capped lateral can only be reused if it is connected, in good condition and the video is submitted, and it also notes a backflow device may be prudent in hilly areas. A USD repair permit is required before any lateral work.
So inspection footage is not just curiosity. It is the record that supports the repair permit, and it shows whether an existing lateral can be reused in a remodel or rebuild.

Want it scheduled?
Call and tell us why you want the inspection, whether a purchase, a repeat clog or a repair plan, and we will line up the right visit.
Prepare for the Visit
- Find your cleanout, a capped pipe near the house or behind the sidewalk
- Make a note of where drains have been slow
- Keep water use light before we arrive
- Tell us about past cleanings or repairs
- Gather any earlier camera video or reports
- Give us access to the yard if the cleanout is outside
If there is no cleanout, access may come through a vent or by pulling a toilet. We will explain the options before we start.
Buying a Home? Check the Sewer First
A general home inspection rarely looks inside the sewer lateral. In Union City the owner is responsible for the whole lateral to the main, so once you close, a hidden break is your repair bill. A camera visit before you commit costs far less than a surprise afterwards.
Share the footage with your agent so any issue can be addressed in negotiation, and ask the seller for any past plumbing records. We can also advise whether the finding is minor or something to price into the offer.
If we find a problem, see sewer line repair for the options. Serving Union City and nearby areas, including Fremont.
What an Inspection Does Not Tell You
A camera sees the inside surface only. It does not measure soil movement or predict when a sound pipe will fail. If the line is full of debris, we clear it first, see hydro jetting, and then re-run the camera so the picture is accurate.
Sewer Inspection Questions
It shows the pipe's material, joints, roots, cracks, offsets and bellies, with a live view and video. It also shows how far each defect extends.
Yes, because a standard home inspection rarely covers the lateral. In Union City the owner is responsible for the entire lateral up to the USD main, so a hidden defect is a cost you inherit.
USD describes it as a capped pipe just outside the building or just behind the sidewalk on your property. Older homes may not have one.
Yes. A camera is often the first step when a line is backing up repeatedly. Call the 24/7 line and a plumber will advise on timing.
We explain the footage and can share it for permit, purchase or repair planning. Ask when you call.
It can follow the pipe through the slab from a cleanout, but it cannot see through concrete. Locating the pipe's position above ground uses the camera's locator.
