Sewer Backing Up? Do These Four Things

A blocked sewer lateral tends to show itself at the lowest drain, usually a ground-floor tub, a shower or a floor drain. Call the 24/7 line and, while you wait, work through these steps.

  • Stop all water. Every flush, shower and load of laundry adds to what is already stuck in the pipe.
  • Locate the cleanout. Leave the cap on unless we tell you otherwise, since a full line can release sewage the moment it opens.
  • Call USD if the main may be involved. USD checks its main for free and takes calls around the clock.
  • Protect the floor. Move rugs, shoes and electronics away from drains and tubs.

Do not stand in the area if sewage has pooled, and keep kids and pets out. Sewage carries bacteria, so use gloves for any cleanup. After-hours calls are handled on the same line as daytime ones, and same-day service depends on the day, so ask when you call.

What Sits Between Your House and the Street

The sewer lateral is the single pipe that carries every drain in the house to the public main. It leaves the building, usually underground and often under a lawn or driveway, then crosses the property line and the sidewalk to connect to the main in the street. Because it handles everything the house sends out, a problem in this one pipe backs up the whole house.

A lateral can be blocked in several different ways. Grease and wipes pile up at a bend. Roots enter at a joint and form a net that traps paper. A sag, known as a belly, holds water and solids that a cable cannot lift out. The cleaning approach is different for each, so we find out which before we start.

Four common causes

Why Main Sewer Lines Block

1

Roots

Fine roots find a joint, enter, and grow into a mat. We cut them with a machine, then jet the line. Roots return unless the joint is repaired.

2

Bellies

A low spot in the pipe holds water. Solids settle and build up. Cleaning helps for a while, but only repair fixes the grade.

3

Grease and wipes

Kitchen fat and flushed wipes harden and snag. These respond well to a cable followed by jetting.

4

Broken or offset pipe

A cracked, collapsed or shifted joint stops the cable and catches debris. A camera shows it. Cleaning cannot fix it.

These are starting points. The pipe tells us what it needs once we are inside it.

Where the Cleanout Is and Who Owns the Pipe

USD describes the cleanout as a capped pipe just outside the building or just behind the sidewalk on your property, and notes that older homes may not have one. The property owner is responsible for the entire lateral up to the main, including the stretch under the sidewalk and street.

Finding the cap before we arrive saves time, since it is the direct way into the pipe. Never open a manhole in the street, because USD says only its own staff may do so.

The sewer lateral and its cleanout are installed to the California Plumbing Code, which is based on the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC), and USD sets rules for lateral work. If a line needs repeated cleaning, ask for a camera inspection to see whether the pipe meets that standard or needs repair.

Cleaning Is Not Always the Answer

A cleaned lateral is a lateral that works for now. If the camera shows a belly, a break or a root entry, cleaning only buys time. We tell you plainly whether it will hold for years or whether the pipe is on borrowed time, so you are not paying for the same clearing every spring.

If the picture is unclear, we schedule a planned sewer camera inspection, and when the pipe has failed, the options are in sewer line repair. We serve Fremont, Newark and the Tri-City area as well, see our Fremont service. For fixtures inside the house, drain cleaning is the right page.

FAQ

Sewer Line Cleaning Questions

Yes. The line is answered 24/7, including nights, weekends and holidays. When sewage is backing up into a tub or floor drain, call, keep water off and tell us whether you can find the cleanout. Ask about same-day service on the call.

If multiple fixtures are slow or gurgling, or the lowest tub or shower backs up when you run the washer, the blockage is likely in the main line or lateral.

Look for a capped pipe near the house or just behind the sidewalk. USD says older homes may not have one. If you cannot find it, we can look for access through a vent or toilet, and talk about installing one.

Often yes. We can cut and jet them out, but the joint where they entered stays open. A camera shows whether the entry is minor or serious.

USD handles its own main. Call USD at (510) 477-7500, since it checks the main free of charge. If the main is clear, the blockage is on the owner's side of the connection.

Clearing a stoppage does not need a city permit under Union City's own list of work not requiring one. Replacing concealed pipe does, and any lateral repair requires a USD permit. Ask the Building Division at 510.675.5313 if you are unsure.
